Five on Friday

You know how Cely has 15 hilariously awesome things that come to her each Friday? Well go there for them. Over here, we have far less funny, somewhat coherent musings in smaller quantities. I know, you're excited right? Geez, do I know how to sell it.

1. These pockets. What the eff? I don't normally store stuff right under my boob, so this is basically the least useful feature ever. Thanks, Puma! In their defense, I did buy this in Hong Kong at an outlet so it could be made by some random Chinese brand. Who knows?

2. I was really interested in what everyone had to say about the comment leaving love fest in the blog world. Turns out, it's no big deal to read a blog and move on. But don't worry, I still spent 16 hours leaving a heartfelt novel on each and every blog in return. Oh no, wait - no, no I didn't. My bad.

3. It's cold. It's fall. It feels like winter. Until winter actually comes, when that will feel like Antarctica on the shortest day of the year. Thankfully, I have a husband who appreciate the subtle changes of season and documents it.

ugh. nature.

4. The topknot. I've seen in in 6,764 blogs, and thought, "Hey, I have hair. I'll try it." Fail. I'll leave it to your crazy fashionable ladies. It's oddly heavy and makes me unbalanced. How is that possible?

5. I feel like I should have my outfit for the marathon picked out already, but I don't. But I have tried on every running related thing in my closet...and decided I need a new shirt. What would you wear with this as the forecast:

Long sleeves? Short sleeves? A sports bra and painted on abs? Because there is no way I'm showing my tummy off as is. THEY TAKE PICTURES AT THESE THINGS!

P.S. I didn't run today. Stupid taper. Can you tell I have a lot of bottled up energy and nowhere to let it go?

Seriously - if it's 45 at the start, maybe 60 at the end - what do I wear? Long or short sleeves? Serious decisions here, people!

Do you ever read fashion blogs?
I have glimpsed at a couple...honestly, they (along with fashion magazines) are lost on me. I would not attempt some of the combinations some people wear. Is it just me? Some of that stuff is bizarre!

Comments

  1. I've read a few fashion blogs but to be honest, they make me feel terrible about my lack of style. I should read them with a "learning" eye instead of a "man they know what they're doing and I don't" eye...

  2. Good luck this weekend! I'm so excited for you and can't wait to hear all about it. I glimpse on fashion blogs every so often, but only to check out clothes I can't afford.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Haha hmm...maybe you can wear short sleeves and a long sleeve "throw away" on top?? I know I'm freezing for at least my first 4-5 miles but depending on the rate that the weather goes up, you might get hot faster!?

I follow a few fashion blogs but don't read them as often as I do running/food blogs. I have come to the point where I wear sports bras under everything and leggings as my everyday pants because I can't imagine wearing something non-stretchy!

    ReplyDelete
  4. LOL! you are too funny. I feel ya on the comment luv. I try, but its my own damn fault I follow too many blogs. So, yes, sometimes you just need to read and smile.
oh and the top knot...i like it. I look like a nun. haha.

  5. I agree with Christina, a throw away long sleeve is probably your best bet. I know last year one of my girl friends ran a half in shorts and a tank top when it was slightly colder, but that was in the spring when it felt warmer... if you can tolerate cold you could probably get by with capris and a t-shirt, but I'd do long sleeve.

    Good luck!!

  6. Fashion blogs are lost on me too.

I run pretty warm so I would wear a shirt and either capris or long shorts with maybe a windbreaker over it and cover up in trash bags at the start.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I don't dig topknots either! I'm not super fashionable, I just go with the basics, but my kiddos are pretty fashionable. I'd go with throwaway sleeves (cheap socks cut as sleeves so you don't mind leaving them). I don't comment on every blog every day, just the ones I feel compelled to comment on, I wish everyone commented on mine every day, cuz it would make me feel special :-)

  8. When I ran the Las Vegas marathon in was 44 degrees at the start. I still wore shorts and a tank and warmed up by Mile 2. It would be wise to dress warm with throw away clothes though. I was freezing but didn't want the hassle of the jacket plus I don't have anything I am willing to throw away!!

    ReplyDelete
  9. hope you figured out a great outfit!

Ha, the pockets on that jacket...HILARIOUS! I have a Nike running jacket that has high pockets too, never use them and what an odd place for pockets!!!

    ReplyDelete
  10. Arm Warmers! Shut Up and Run uses cheap tube socks cut at the ankles for a cheap throwaway option if you don't want to run with them on the entire time. 45 is definitely Capri length tights weather for me.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Definitely shorts, short sleeves, and a long sleeve throw away or shirt to hand off to a lovely spectator friend :)

    ReplyDelete
  12. I always put my hands in high pockets, feels completely natural Haha jk. As much as I hate the cold weather, it does make breathing easier when running.

Fashion blogs...pointless for me bc half the stuff is for petite girls! That I am not LOL.

    ReplyDelete
  13. My marathon had the same temps. I am usually cold while not moving...I wore the ugliest long sleeve I had (big turkey on the front) and threw it away by the first mile then I had a short sleeve and skirt on. But my sister saw me throw it and rescued the ugly shirt. So now I have it for the next race.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Short sleeve under a throw away def!!!!! Fashion blogs.. No I don't want to feel like a mom slob! HAHA!!

    ReplyDelete
  15. I agree with you on the "top knot". I don't like it too much. It's like why would you want to pile your hair on top of your head? I'm a fan of the old-fashioned ponytail.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Fashion blogs make me feel even less fashionable than I already am! I try to avoid them ;).
As for commenting- who doesn't love getting comments on their blog? BUT it gets challenging to leave a meaningful comment on EVERY blog I follow.
I would run in short sleeves- a tank, even. Most of the races I've done start in the 30's or 40's and then get up close to 60+. I wear a sweatshirt/jacket up until the last minute, then toss it in my drop bag and jump up and down to get warm until the race starts ;). My body is always warmed up within the first mile or so.

    ReplyDelete
  17. If it were me, I would definitely wear short sleeves in that weather and maybe even a tank top! I would rather be way cold at the start than be too hot at any point during the race. I feel like you will warm up quickly and if you're too hot it could make you sluggish but if you're too cold it will just make you want to keep running to stay warm!

    Good luck!!

    ReplyDelete
  18. You definitely want short sleeves. If you're worried about being cold at the start, take some old high socks and cut off the feet. Bam, instant throwaway arm warmers!

    ReplyDelete
  19. You want a throw away long sleeve shirt or arm warmers. It will be short sleeve weather by the end!!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Of all bloggers, the topknot looks best on YOU! No kidding!

    ReplyDelete
  21. As a follow up to my last comment...I just ran a little experiment for you since it's a 46 degrees where I live. The route I took is shady for about 70% of the time and there were no clouds in the sky and it was around 2:30PM my time. I ran 3 miles in a sports bra, long sleeve mesh shirt, and compression shorts that hit just above the knee. I was sweating before I hit mile 1 and I was running at a comfortable pace. The sun definitely helped with warming me up. You'll probably be starting early in the morning so it might feel cooler until the sun rises.

I believe that the conditions of my half marathon last year were similar to what you are facing and my mom and I both ran in short sleeve breathable shirts and spandex pants that hit just below the knee and it was comfortable for both of us. I'm not sure we even needed throw away clothes (we brought warmer clothes but ended up checking them at the bag check). Hope this helps!! Good luck!

  22. And my nose was a little runny so don't forget a kleenex or two (I always forget to grab a few before my races)!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I used to read Vogue religiously. Then I realized that what I wear, every day, is a suit (for work meetings), and workout clothes, mixed up with denim + a sweater on weekends.

The article that (finally) saved me from dropping $50/year on magazines was this one:
    http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/05/business/05uniform.html?pagewanted=all

I'm still working on my "signature" style, but my go-to outfit right now is a basic black top, classic-but-bright bottom, a HUGE bracelet, and flats. (gotta keep those calves happy for running!)

    ReplyDelete
  24. Absolutely short sleeves, you will get so hot by the end. I would probably do a throwaway shirt for the beginning, but run most of the race in short sleeves and shorts. I wore a garbage bag before MCM and it helped. I still have the same clothes I've had since I started teaching (7 years ago) so fashion blogs or magazines would be a waste of money for me. And now I have no makeup, so I really look attractive.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Yip, everyone seems to have covered the basics for clothing. I absolutely LOVE the colour changes of autumn, I was out snapping tree pictures today - sad, I know !

    ReplyDelete
  26. I think your hair is a lot cuter than you're giving it credit for.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Geeze thats cold

And your hair looks just fine lol

Also boob pockets are weird.... if you put anything in them it'll look like you have lumpy underboob

    ReplyDelete
  28. I would definitely wear shorts and short sleeves. Maybe start the race with some cheap-o wal-mart gloves that you can throw off once you warmup. In long sleeves, you will roast!

    ReplyDelete
  29. hahaha boob pockets!!! man, i love it just to make fun of it...maybe they are made for gals who just like to try and secretly check their ladies now and again??

ya, i get super overly energetic/agitated during a taper...but it's all for a good cause, game day is GO time! :)

    ReplyDelete
  30. be glad you are in georgia, where it doesn't drop below zero in the winter! jealous! pretty pictures, too.

i'd stick to short sleeves and either shorts or capris, but i've never run a marathon, so i'm no expert.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I think if you got it in hong kong those are pockets in the right place.....for smaller people :D lol I love the boob pockets though....if I had those I'd just throw some padding in there then when it got hot it'd be a really big surprise! lol

    GOOD LUCK!

    ReplyDelete
  32. You're hilarious!!! Plain and simple - cracking me up over here!!!!
Has anyone ever told you that you kind of look like Laura Ingles (the side view of your high knot in particular fancies the ol' Little House on the Prairie image).
I vote short sleeve with a throw away shirt at the start (or a friend who can hold your shirt for you during the race and give it to you afterward). I'm not one to ever vote for sports bra - but do like the painted abs - classy! I think long sleeves might be too hot (though, do you prefer to feel warm when you run? If so then long sleeves). Am I helping yet? Try runner's world What to wear - awesome tool!
Good luck - and . . . after having my 2 halfs only 7 days a part, I'm now a big FAN of waiting closer to the race to decide - I picked an outfit and the forecast changed or at least it didn't feel as warm as my brain thought it was going to feel and changed my outfit at the last minute - you're good no worries.
Enjoy the taper - it's lovely. You'll do so great at your race!!! Cheering for you from IN!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Do you have arm warmers? They'd be great for the start and then you can pull them down once you get warm. They're my go-to during adventure races.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I would def go with short sleeves and get a cheap sweatshirt and gloves (they have super cheap gloves at the expo for this exact reason) to wear to the race and till you warm up, toss the gloves and sweatshirt. They'll pick up all clothing that is tossed and donate it to charity or a homeless shelter. Good luck!!!!

  35. I ran my first marathon this weekend (Savannah) and the temps were pretty similar. It was between 45-50 at the start band probably 55-60 at the finish. I work my race outfit (compression shorts and a Target dry-fit tee) and then added arm sleeves (pulled off around Mile 14) and a throwaway jacket (removed at Mile 3). I felt great the whole time - my hands and feet were freezing at first, but it took about a mile or so to get warm.

    Good luck with your race!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Is that first photo, of the pretty red variety, a picture hubby took of POISON IVY? lol.

Funny on the jacket, store it under "things an 8 year old would wear).

    ReplyDelete
  37. 45 at the start? wear a short sleeve shirt and shorts or capris tights. that's PERFECT racing weather!

Race the Bar 5k Recap (AKA: A Personal Worst!)

Do you remember a few weeks back, when I was all braggy about running in Florida in February/March? Sunny mornings around a lake with a light breeze off the water have turned, cruelly, into humid stretches of time where I am humbly reminded of my own limitations. You guys, I see these gazelle-like creatures, men and women alike, who prance on my running route with compression socks, a soft glow of perspiration at their brow. It's beautiful. It's also a harsh reminder that I am not them. I am currently running in the thinnest, smallest items of clothing I can without offending anyone (shirt stays on, people). I dare not step outside without some awful visor or wide-brimmed hat. When I hop in the shower after a run, my face is a deep crimson that causes my husband to voice his concern for my general well-being. Have I mentioned this is what happens after my easy runs, with a few walk breaks thrown in? Yeah. It's humbling. Now, I'm not complaining. It's beautiful

1st Wedding Anniversary--Celebrating with Chocolate!

One year ago today, I married the love of my life. And I couldn't be happier! In celebration of our very first anniversary, here are some pictures of our favorite moments together: Our first trail race together Hiking together in GA And of course, our wonderful wedding in Hong Kong. We both decided to keep things very simple, with a casual ceremony with a few friends and family and then lunch at the Mandarin Oriental. Exactly what I wanted! With our parents after making it official! Our entire wedding party. Just family and dear friends! Goofing around with my garter at the reception lunch! You think you know what couples do after they get married? You know, their first night at man and wife? If you guessed eat ridiculously delicious chocolates in their bed at the Grand Hyatt, you're right.  Oh, I haven't changed. One year later and I still celebrate with sweet things! Thanks Tim, for being a wonderful husband. I love you!

Brace Yourselves: Cuteness is Coming

One of the hardest things about moving, for me, was wondering how the cats would adjust each time. Although our cats are super travelers at this stage, I feel really guilty every time we have to pack them up and force them onto a plane. I remember my grandma telling me years ago that when she moved with a cat, they put butter on their paws. That way, the cats spent the first day in a new house licking their paws to get them clean, and that was enough time to lose the "smell" of the old house. I love that story, and I wish the same principle applied to longer moves. Anyway, that's a super long intro to say that for the fellow cat ladies out there, our three fur babies are insanely happy in this jungle gym of a home here in Florida. It's warm, there are plenty of sunny spots to curl up a take a nap, and they have lots of room to spread out. Despite the space, of course, they still usually want to take a nap on my head at night. Obviously. They also love climbing on ou
